It's The Beatles! Dress Up Game Review

While fans for regular, everyday bands may be fairly fanatical in nature, there appears to be no limit to the obsession and hysteria that surrounds The Beatles, even to the present day. Such obsession with a band as legendary as that formed by John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, and George Harrison all those years ago is evident in many modern-day trends such as the sales of their records and the existence of a wide range of memorabilia, as well as Beatles tours that still take fans that have come from afar around the band's home town of Liverpool to see buildings and locations of significant to the band.

There's even a Beatles: Rock Band game that formed part of the once-successful rhythm-based series for consoles. This isn't as extreme as fandom gets, though: there's even a Beatles dress-up game. That's right, someone has taken time out of their lives to actually come up with a way of simulating a simple dressing up scenario involving all four members of the band. Whilst dressing up games certainly aren't new, this seems to be one of the only dressing up games related to the Beatles out there, and it isn't half bad either.

So, what can you expect from this very specific niche of entertainment based around dressing up The Beatles, one of the most famous bands in history? Well, the clue really is in the title, and there really isn't that much subtext whatsoever. The gameplay is based entirely around dressing up either John, Paul, George, or Ringo with a variety of different items of clothing. You simply use the mouse to select which member of the band you wish to dress up, and then use the mouse again to select the item of clothing you wish to apply to your chosen member. It's really as simple as that, with no frills or messing about with unnecessary things like 3D graphics or storyline.

Each member of the band has their own section, and selecting the individual members brings up a dressing screen with the almost-naked member on the left and the wardrobe items on the right. You will select between a choice four shirts, four shoes, four hairstyles, and four sets of “pants” (trousers in the UK, of course). One can mix and match the outfits if feeling adventurous or simply go for the matching options if you're a little bit meticulous about things. One of the best features is the fact that each member of the band has their own Beatles song playing in the background when you're dressing them up. Lennon's got Come Together, Paul McCartney has I've got a Feeling, George Harrison has While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and Octopus's Garden is obviously the background song when you're dressing him up.

This is pretty much where the game ceases its entertainment value unfortunately, since it doesn't have an option to share any of your creations. The outfits are pretty standard in the first place as well, with nothing outrageous and really not much variety going on at all between all of the members. The game feels like it's not really meant to be enjoyed by a wide audience, since only the most obsessive of Beatles fans will want a go at this, and its audience is further limited to mainly women since it isn't a game that too many men would be interested in. It really fails to deliver the variety that other dress up games like Anime Character Maker 2 offer, but the intention of the creator doesn't appear to be one of it being a commercial game but rather a simple and fun way for Beatles fans to spend a few minutes.

The game's design is pretty polished though the whole thing is in 2D. The characters are pretty true to life, and each item of style/piece of clothing is pretty well-illustrated and fits on the members well in addition. Since this is really the only Beatles dress up game out there, it is pretty difficult to criticise or compare since it has no other competition. It is a fine bit of novelty fun for the most passionate of Beatles fans out there.
