Film
With the exception of The Beatles Movies and Roy Carr's Beatles at the Movies, books which deal exclusively with the Beatles' film career in its totality are virtually non-existent. However, three books should be consulted for their informed approach to the films. Lewisohn's Complete Beatles Chronicle provides an indispensable day-to-day account of the Beatles' entire career and is, without doubt, the most informed source of factual information on the group written to date. Walker's Hollywood, England contains a riveting commentary on the making of A Hard Day's Night, and Harry's Beatlemania contains interesting information on the group's movies and television appearances. Although released some three years after the publication of this book, the Beatles own memoir, The Beatles Anthology, also offers some compelling recollections of the films from the group's perspective.
Music
Mark Lewisohn's Complete Beatles Recording Sessions is a first-rate diary of the group's recording endeavours for those seeking factual information regarding the production of the films' soundtracks. Neville Stannard's Long and Winding Road also provides an excellent discography. For a more critical approach, MacDonald's Revolution in the Head is highly recommended.
The Beatles' Career
Apart from Lewisohn's day-by-day chronicle, Philip Norman's Shout! provides an informed and gripping narrative. Davies' The Beatles is also a well-written account of the Beatles' history, and contains fascinating interviews with all four members of the group. Finally, for an informed and fascinating insight into the Beatles' position within sixties pop culture, see Melly's extraordinary Revolt into Style. The Beatles Anthology is also highly recommended.
